For Immediate Release:  “The Official We ARE Terrible Towel” release set for Lions-Browns game November 22, 2009

DETROIT – Long-time suffering Detroit fans Gordon Miller and John Crick couldn’t have been more humiliated after repeatedly getting smacked in the face with Terrible Towels during yet another loss by the Lions at Ford Field. They thought to themselves: “Who really is the Terrible Team here?”

While forced to eat black and gold cloth for much of the Oct. 11 game as the Pittsburgh Steelers beat the Lions, Miller and Crick thought of an ingenious idea during the loss, formulating “The Official We ARE Terrible Towel: A Detroit Original Since 1957.”

The white towels (for surrender, of course) with blue lettering will be ready for sale in the days leading up to the Lions-Browns game Nov. 22, and for Detroit’s national television matchup against Green Bay on Thanksgiving Day.

Detroit fans can show their support for the losing Lions by logging on to www.weAREterribletowel.com and then can wave their towels proudly.

The Official We ARE Terrible Towel” costs $10 each, plus shipping and handling, two for $15 or three for $20. Fans ordering more than three pay just $6 each.

After years of watching a losing team you become detached to the agony of defeat, you simply accept it,” said Miller, who was born in Detroit and is season-ticket holder. “After the Steelers came to town and I kept getting hit in the face with twirling Terrible Towels it occurred to me I needed to do something.

“Why not find a way to have a little fun, kind of take pride in what you are and embrace it?” added Miller. “How about saving the word ‘Terrible’ for those of us whose teams really are terrible?”

Miller and Crick believe there isn’t a better sports franchise to launch their new line of “The Official We ARE Terrible Towel” than the Lions – and the numbers back them up. The Lions hold the NFL record for most consecutive road losses (24), established in 2001-03, and are the only team in league history to complete a winless 0-16 season. The Lions have followed up that hapless 2008 season with a 1-8 record so far in 2009 heading into the Browns game.

In addition, the Lions have won just one playoff game in a half century and made the postseason just nine tines since last winning the NFL Championship in 1957, which is referenced in “The Official We ARE Terrible Towel.”

Miller and Crick plan to expand “The Official We ARE Terrible Towel” line to incorporate other losing teams, whose fans in the past have either booed excessively or placed paper bags over their heads at games.

“It’s hard to eat a hot dog or drink a soda with a bag over your head,” Miller said. “With “The Official We ARE Terrible Towel” you can eat, drink, boo and still wave your towel. We’ll be expanding the concept to allow other equally unfortunate fans of losing teams to share in the fun. Don’t worry Browns fans … we feel your pain.”
